SUNDAY 28 APRIL 2019 - 16:30

This documentary film is an introductory musical journey presenting the great composer and his vast, little known musical tradition. It recounts the life and work of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) seen against the period of history in which he lived, fluctuating between the past and modern times, tradition and discovery, here and elsewhere. From Rio de Janeiro at the start of the 20th century, to the heart of the cultural scene in Paris in the 1920s, from modern Brazil in the 1930s to the régime of Getúlio Vargas in the 1950s, then reaching its apotheosis with the recognition of his work, the powerful soul of this composer causes audiences to travel from Nantes to São Paulo and from Paris to Rio de Janeiro, to discover the diversity of his work, for its modernity and lasting presence in the repertoires of both Brazilian and French music. Today, his music is known the world over for its ability to form a mystical connection between classical and popular music.
